LEGENDS ABOUT THE CITY
- JOK MEGDAN - The legend says that the Turks, during their first conquest of Herceg Novi, were terribly defeated at this location. One of the brave defenders of the city called the Turkish leader to a duel, but he, running away, just yelled: "JOK, MEGDAN" ("No duel"), thus, this part of the city kept that name until today.
After that battle, according to the legend, the spring beneath Jok Megdan was filled with blood. From then on this drinking water spring (active even nowadays) is called KARADŽA, or more often KARAČA (turkish word for BLACK).
Nowdays, Jok megdan is a part of the city along the Adriatic Highway.
- NEMILA - Even today there is a spring called Nemila, located above Herceg Novi (part of today's community of Srbina). Its original name was "MILA" (darling) and it acquired its present one after a tragic death of two young men, good friends, who took their lives here because of love for the same woman.
